Diversity in the Classroom
The United States of America is considered a melting pot because of the various cultures and customs that combine to form one nation. A recent census states that thirteen percent of the United States population is born in a foreign country. This is a twenty percent increase from the census of 2000 (Suarez-Orozco, 2010). So, it is not surprising that this diversity would affect the schools. It is estimated the one out of every five students that walks into a classroom are either first or second generation immigrants. This number should rise to about one out of every three students by the year 2040 (Sadowski, 2010). It is this diversity that makes the classroom both an exciting and challenging environment for everyone involved. |
